WELCOME to the 2021 Raccoon Virtual Run
May 8, 2021
Like last year, we are again planning a virtual race!
As we continue to support Life with Cancer (LWC) and dedicate the Raccoon Run in memory of Roberta Romano and the many who have lost their battles with cancer, this year we are especially proud to honor someone who has devoted 23 years to helping those living with cancer, Drucilla Brethwate, or affectionately known as “Doodie” in the Mantua community!
Since 1998, Drucilla has been part of the Life with Cancer team, most recently retiring from her role as director overseeing the delivery of the incredible Life with Cancer programs offered for patients and families touched by cancer. During her tenure, Drucilla provided counseling to individuals, couples, and families helping them navigate the complexities of living with cancer.
Always an advocate for providing evidence-based state-of-the-art care, Drucilla, in collaboration with the LWC team helped create innovative programming focused on the many challenges that occur when one is diagnosed with cancer. Programs focused on couples, wellness, survivorship, resiliency, caregivers, end of life, grief and bereavement, as well as, classes addressing symptom management like insomnia and brain fog. She shared her work and Life with Cancer research, not just with patients and families, but also in the community, providing talks, locally and nationally, and publishing and teaching as adjunct faculty at George Mason University.
Especially meaningful to the Raccoon Run team is that Drucilla has been a neighbor and friend for more than 37 years. She has been actively involved in many aspects of Mantua life including the Mantua PTA, Mantua Citizens Association, Swim and Tennis, Providence Players, and has worked on campaigns of neighbors running for school board and the state legislature.
As a long-time member of the Mantua community, “Doodie” knew Mantua’s own 5th grade teacher, Roberta Romano, for whom this race has been dedicated to for 20 years. Coming full circle, Doodie, as Mantua PTA president, supported the after-school program, Kids Care Club, in sponsoring the first Raccoon Run in 2000!
So in memory of Roberta and in honor of Doodie, find your running shoes and let’s come together as a community in support of LWC. Here’s how:
